Choose an integration identity

Treat a publishing connection as a named member of the content process. A dedicated WordPress user makes attribution and access review easier than sharing the founder's everyday login. Choose permissions according to the operations you actually need: drafting, uploading images, editing existing posts, and publishing are different requirements. WordPress documents Application Passwords for remote REST API authentication over HTTPS. Confirm that the particular site supports the chosen method, since hosting configuration or plugins can affect availability. This guide recommends a connection design rather than a universal permission recipe.

Make onboarding explain the access

The connection screen should explain the destination domain and intended actions in plain language. For a hypothetical design agency, the client should see that the connection creates blog drafts on the agency's site, rather than assume it can only read public pages. Ask for the credential once, transmit it securely, and return a neutral connection status. Do not display the full credential again. A useful confirmation shows the site name and connected account without exposing a reusable secret. Keep access to the credential separate from access to ordinary article records.

Test capabilities without making noise

Start with a harmless authenticated check, then use a designated test draft when write access needs verification. Delete or clearly label that draft according to the agreed test process. Exercise media upload separately if the product promises images; an account able to create text may still fail another operation. Show an actionable error such as missing media permission or rejected authentication, while redacting request authorization data. The agency example should end with a visible draft and an explicit explanation of which publishing capabilities were verified.

Rotate and revoke deliberately

Provide a disconnect action that prevents new jobs from starting and explains how to revoke the credential at its source. Decide what happens to queued work: pausing it is usually clearer than repeatedly retrying with invalid credentials. When rotating credentials, run a fresh capability check and resume only the intended destination. Cloudflare Workers secrets are suitable for deployment-level secrets; a multi-customer product additionally needs a considered per-customer credential storage design. Do not place every customer's password into public configuration files or treat ordinary database access as sufficient secret management.

Keep an audit trail that helps support

Record connection creation, successful verification, disconnection, and failed publishing attempts with timestamps and safe identifiers. Useful support data includes the destination site, operation type, remote status, and job identifier. It does not include passwords or complete authorization headers. Add a periodic access review when team members leave or client contracts end. For the design agency, each client connection should be independently removable so one revocation does not interrupt other sites. The practical goal is controlled access that the customer can understand, test, and withdraw without losing ownership of published content.

Set a connection owner who receives access-related notices and can repair the integration. This avoids a common operational gap when the person who originally connected the website is unavailable or has left the customer's team.

PUT IT TO WORK

Use a dedicated identity, verify required capabilities, and make credential revocation straightforward.
